PADI IDC enquiries

Herea are a selection of PADI IDC enquiries that we pass on to our Course Directors:

1, I am interested in your IDC course. But my situation is not so certain yet. I will have finished PADI Divemaster course by the end of December on Koh Tao, Thailand. I will have enough funds for the IDC course and examination in case if I would start it right after the divemaster course.

But I still have to wait till April – the reason for that is that I passed my Open Water Diver on the 20th of September. I am going to look for the job as a divemaster. If I will succeed to minimize my expenditures until the beginning of the course and still will have some funds by the end of March – I will be glad to start the IDC course.

I freely speak 4 languages: Polish, Russian, English and Ukrainian and I learn Spanish intensively. I also have decent experience I tourism industry (until recently I had been running a rafting company in Ukraine) and some 8 years before worked as holiday representative in Turkey. [Enquiry 1] I sent you the photo yet the certification isn’t showing on my credentials and I haven’t received letter letting me know they have a current photo on file. that would also be fine to use can you do this ? otherwise cancelling my dive trip now I lose quite a lot of money but I cannot dive if I don’t have the certificate I understand
[Enquiry 2]  Hi, we had the opportunity to visit your dive center recently but you wasn’t there, I was told you had the day off,  I’m  interested to send you my cv to introduce myself.
I am an OWSI Padi, at the moment living in the UK. I did in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt to take my PADI IDC  and I started working over there for some diving centers, my main tasks were leading dives for international guests, teaching Discover Scuba Diving, Padi Scuba Diver and PADI Open Water Diver.  I also led snorkeling trip on board and any kind of tasks on board to assist divers and colleagues.My first experience  was as Divemaster in Thailand. I led cave and cavern diving first  but I also worked as Snorkeling Guide,  in filling tanks operations  and front office tasks when needed.

I consider myself to be a very communicative and open minded person. During my travels and culture studies I learned to deal with people from different cultural backgrounds.

Based on this I understand diving not as a purely recreational activity but as a chance to study and therefore conserve the marine habitat. As a Dive Professional I start to have the chance to share knowledge about marine life and inspire divers to appreciate the richness of marine life and treasure it.

Course Director Inclusion

We are very particular about which Course Director’s we include in the guide, the following conversation demonstrates that not all the people we have dealt with act with integrity

[Choosing IDC] So it’s going to only be under $100 for this candidate?

[Course Director] Yes – I was actually very pleased with that – didn’t think it would be that much at all – you are lucky exchange rate is so strong.

[IDC Guide] what about the other points (website updates / idc guide inclusion) what have you decided to do about those?

I would be happy to give you your idc-guide inclusion free over the last 8 months (as I never intended to charge you for it initially)

but would like  you to be a paid member (like phil, andy and steve) for the next 12 months for a bargain £100 and would like a token payment

[Course Director] I still find that a high fee compared to choosing IDC which is up and running for 8 years or so now which is cheaper and has many more websites connected to would you be willing to 150 GBP for two years?

I could pay you that this week along with last commission of £100 for the website updates over the 18 months.

Need to make final decision on “£100 for the website updates over the 18 months.”

[Choosing IDC] In retrospect these are very small and token payments and represent lots of work and good value for you. If you dont want to be in the website. We have other Course Directors that are willing to take your place, you will be the only Thailand CD in the guide with exclusivity guarenteed.

Really want to get this sorted and to move on and concentrate on other things as this has been going on for months and months now.

[Course Director] How do the inquiries from the sales of your CD fit into to all this? Not messing you around, I just want to make sure that we are 100% on the same page this time so we don’t have any messy misunderstandings in the future – or that is my aim. Thanks, should be able to reply tomorrow night if all goes OK tomorrow.

Hey there very quickly as I MUST get these reports written up and sent to PADI we have the PADI top guys over as Examiners (Manager and Director of Instructor Development, Training and Education AND QM Dept) mostly to have around the table social with Phuket Course Directors about IDCs / IEs and the IDC curriculum etc and I MUST get them in before – take too long to explain it to you and most is confidential about a certain CD and recent events and a whole load of other stuff. NOT getting the time I had hoped to get at the moment to finish off these 3 projects incl you and IDC Guide

[Choosing IDC] Are we going to conclude the points in the ‘green’ email that are outstanding? Its been going on for so long now.

[Course Director] There is no green in this mail – I thought we had sorted this already after you deducted dive website commission, scuba tours website commission – which based on 20% would be around 400 GBP each – which more than covers your 100 GBP that you are asking for the bits you did in your own time when you were setting up delicious / Essex Web Design, with my testimonials to you for my website.

Please resend any points that wish to redisuss – and if that doesn’t work – please remove me from any website I am on and refund my money for the 2 years which I have yet to receive a receipt for.

I was actually going to send you a long e-mail tomorrow / today (Wednesday) to  ask you what I could do to help with the dive theory as I have time to work on it, and contribute, but if this is how you want it then just call it a day.

You can then also explain why when you agreed to remove the idc-guide link from home page and then we found it still there on the bottom right hand corner of the home page thinking I wouldn’t see it

Quite happy to explain to all the other CDs why I am leaving the group if you want, and any others who sign up, come to that. I was hoping to start a nice working relationship with you again now that I had time to work on websites etc as I very much enjoyed working with you but if this is your attitude then there doesn’t seem much point?

[Choosing IDC] This crazy information on the back of all the other things has got too much. Read the emails you have been sending me for weeks about ‘sorting it out’. You are now saying I owe you money! Well, i was being very good to you and saying you only owed me only £100 for 18 months of website updates that you are now obviously refusing to pay for. I am going to refund your idc guide inclusion due to this and the fact you have removed the idc-guide link which is part of our agreement, with the refunded money I am going to use that for the 18 months of updates (if you dont believe me check your emails).

You have constantly lied to me and I think this level of professionalism is not good, I have no idea about any hidden links but I see you have now removed all my website links and the idc-guide link from your site now which is your choice

As for trying to blacken my name among other PADI Course Directors, it wouldn’t be the wisest thing you could do and also I should look at your own ‘standing’ in the dive community before you try to tarnish mine. Good luck for the future and I dont think any future correspondence would serve any purpose so goodbye. Its a shame we have come to this as good friends are hard to find

A little know part of working as an Instructor / Dive Centre Manager or owner is answering questions from potential dive students / customers, here are a sample to give you an idea of what to expect:

Scuba diver – I would like to take the Advanced Open Water course. I will be in Thailand from September 27th until October 6th. Is this possible?

Dive centre – Thank you for your enquiry to our dive centre. There are two options for the Advanced Open Water course at our dive centre at this time of year.

There is the PADI Advanced Open Water (Daytrip Option)

This is what you will do during your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course.

This certification includes five Adventure Dives, including the PADI Deep Adventure Dive, the Underwater Navigator Adventure Dive and three of the specialities.

Scuba diver – What is included in the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

Dive centre – All our scuba diving courses include manuals and free scuba diving equipment rental. For the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver program you will receive the PADI Adventures in Diving Manual.

In addition we teach all of our diver level courses in small groups to ensure that you receive the attention that you deserve. All our courses are taught to PADI Standards.

Scuba diver – How much will the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course cost?

Dive centre – The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course will cost 14,000 Baht (2 days/5 dives)

This will include: manuals, scuba diving equipment rental, five boat dives, certification and instructor fees.

Scuba diver – I would like to start the PADI AOW course, do I need to reserve for the Advanced Open Water course or I can just show up in the morning?  I­­­­f I want to dive more or do the nitrox course, is there any package deal?  At that time of the year, is it possible to see any whales and sharks in the dives? Is it easy to get to your location? Finally, do you have any suggestions on accommodation, where is the best place to stay? Thanks.

Scuba diver – Hi I would like to do the Advance Open Diver course as I have done discover scuba diving, please could you give me a quote for the best possible rates.

Dive centre – Thank you for your interest in diving with our dive centre during your stay in Phuket.

You have mentioned you have completed a Discover Scuba Diving course, but have you completed the Open Water certification? You need this prior to starting the advanced certification.For the Open Water licence, if you do not have this already, will take you 3 days.The first day is in the classroom and pool.

Then you have 2 days on the boat where you will complete 4 training dives. Our boat is scheduled for 6 dives over these two days so it is possible to complete 2 fun dives included in the cost.

If you already have the Open Water licence you can start the advanced course, this takes 2 days on the boat, no classroom time. You need to complete 5 training dives and will get the opportunity to do 1 fun dive.

Scuba diver – I did the Scuba Diving Course. Please quote me best rates.

Dive Centre – Then you would need to complete the PADI Open Water Course, you cannot start the Advanced until you have this. When are you planning to be in Phuket?

Scuba diver – I am planning to reach Bangkok on 24th. I want to fly to Phuket on the same day, can you give me the best possible rates as I am getting quotes from other dive centres too.

Dive centre – This is the best rate, the prices are fixed, you will get a good course with a professional instructor. We are a PADI CDC centre which is the highest rating a dive centre can get. Let me know if you wish to make a booking.

Scuba diver – After completing the Open Water Diver course, what will be the depth I can dive and do you rent housing for my camera, if yes, how much will this cost?

Dive Centre – The Open Water Course allows you to dive to 18m, we do not rent housings for cameras as each camera needs specific housing. But we do have a videographer on the boat who can take a 20 min DVD and about 300 photos of you, he charges approx $30 for this and you pay him directly.

Scuba diver – Thanks but I want to do my own videography. Can you suggest any resort for me to stay in as I have seen many on the internet but I would like to know which one is best but at a reasonable price?

Dive centre – We have a video camera and housing which we could rent to you for a daily rate.

There are many guest houses in Patong, starting from about 800thb per night for a basic room with air con and private bathroom. It depends on what you want from a room. The prices will start to increase from October. If you want a budget place there are backpacker inns with dormitories from about 300 thb per night. Or at the other end there are rooms for more than 5000thb per night so it depends on your budget and needs.

PADI Instructor Exam (IE) CDC Option

If you take enrol as a candidate to take your IE at a Career Development Center, and you successfully complete the IE as well as meeting the dive requirements from 100 logged dives, then you will be certified as a PADI IE with official paperwork from PADI.

This option is available to those who have enrolled in five pre or post IDC courses such as the EFRI, Specialty courses and more.)

It is also available as an option if you have enrolled in, and successfully completed, 6 weeks of the PADI IDC development program and have been certified divers for a minimum of 6 months, and have logged at least 60 dives. This program is conducted by your 5 Star PADI IDC CDC. You must be a certified Assistant Instructor, of which is an element of your IDC).
